The growing pervasiveness and continuous improvement of communication technologies is finally enabling the long-standing vision of an actual Internet of Things (IoT), where connected objects are fully integrated into smart environments at multiple scales, from individuals homes to whole cities. In fact, the IoT world is still in its infancy, and much of its potential is yet to be discovered, understood, and leveraged. These are thus exciting and unique times for devising and proposing novel ideas that will shape the evolution of the IoT ecosystem in the coming years.

The ACM Open IoT Day, held in conjunction with ACM MobiSys 2018 - the ACM SIGMOBILE premier conference for the design, implementation, usage, and evaluation of mobile computing and wireless systems, applications, and services - will provide a venue for industry practitioners and academics to examine the future evolution of the IoT, with particular attention to transparency, trust, and ethics aspects arising from the rapid advances in its enabling technologies and applications. Such an emerging ecosystem raises questions that span open designs that allow verification of correctness and security properties, open standards for interoperability, and ethical considerations such as transparency of data flows, crash prioritization in driverless cars or privacy guarantees from IoT devices.

The ACM IoT Day is an informal venue that will gather a heterogeneous, multidisciplinary audience with academic and industrial backgrounds, including top talented MSc and PhD students, junior and senior faculty and industry researchers from around the globe. It will foster stimulating and inspiring discussions on future evolutions of the IoT ecosystem. In this spirit, we invite different types of submissions and offer multiple opportunities for support by industrial partners, as follows.

Vision talks

Propose an inspiring visionary talk to leave your mark with the ACM Open IoT Day audience. Submit an extended abstract that introduces visionary ideas, disruptive concepts, and controversial views related to the pervasive IoT and its transparency, trust, and ethics. Accepted contributions for presentation at the Open IoT Day will be well-argued but do not need to include full implementations or thorough performance evaluations. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Original and augmented definitions of IoT
  • Disruptive technologies enabling IoT
  • Decentralized paradigms for IoT
  • New application scenarios for IoT
  • Challenges and (ethical) risks associated to IoT
  • Transparency, privacy, security, and trust in IoT.

Submission must be in PDF format, with 10pt fonts in letter-sized paper format. They must adhere to the ACM guidelines and be no longer than two pages, plus any number of pages for bibliography references. The following LaTeX template complies with the formatting requirements: http://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2013/misc/sig-alternate-10pt.cls. We also recommend to use only standard printer fonts (e.g., Times Roman, Helvetica, etc.) or standard TeX Computer Modern fonts; other fonts may be used but must be embedded in the PDF file.

Submit Vision talks at https://openiotday18.hotcrp.com/, within the submission deadline set on April 30, 2018. We will have a fast review process of ideas by renowned international experts, with accepted extended abstracts published in the ACM Digital Library. For all enquiries, contact the ACM Open IoT Day Chairs at iot-day-mobisys2018@cm.in.tum.de.

Industry talks

Present an outstanding future tech to the ACM Open IoT Day audience. Submit a one-pager that outlines your talk, including title, abstract, and speaker's bio. The talk shall present solutions, directions, and challenges from industry on and around the IoT.
