Mentorship Program


SIGMOBILE is launching the fourth issue of its Mentorship Program. The goal of this program is to provide SIGMOBILE student members an organized opportunity to interact with senior researchers, either one-on-one or as a small group.

Applications are now open. If you (or your students) are interested, please fill the Mentorship Program Application Form by September 25, 2023. The application requires you to upload your most recent CV and a Mentorship Statement. To be eligible for participation, you must be:

  • Currently enrolled as a graduate student (M.S. or PhD)
  • A registered attendee at ACM MobiCom 2023
  • Available from October 2 - October 6, 2023

iberiA Student Symposium on Emerging Technologies (ASSET)


As part of a student engagement effort by the special interest group in mobility of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM SIGMOBILE), we are offering up to 20 special scholarships to attend the premier mobile computing conference, ACM MobiCom which will be held in Madrid, Spain from Oct 2nd 2023 to Oct 6th 2023.

This scholarship will support some portion of the costs for your participation at the conference itself (in particular the conference registration). In addition, all scholarship recipients will be part of a special program called ASSET (iberiA Student Symposium on Emerging Technologies). As part of ASSET, you will be divided into small groups and each group will be provided with an excellent and dynamic research mentor who will help hone your research skills.


Submission Deadlines


The main dates for the ASSET program are:

  • Deadline: 31st of August 2023
  • Notification: 10th of September 2023

Goals


In particular, ASSET will help you improve your research skills in four ways:

  1. Improve your ability to present their ideas in written form by working on and continuously improving a 1 page summary of their research plan ⇒ This will improve your ability to write research papers.
  2. Improve your ability to present their ideas by allowing all participants to present their research ideas in the form of a poster at the main conference poster presentation session ⇒ This will improve your ability to interest people in their research work when they are given time to present the details.
  3. Improve your ability to present a quick 30s summary (aka ``elevator pitch’’) of their research by asking each participant to summarise their research to their research mentor every day ⇒ This will improve your ability to convince people that their research ideas are worth listening to!.
  4. Improve your ability to understand and appreciate world class research by attending the talks and presentations at MobiCom and interacting with the MobiCom attendees (a “who’s who” of mobile computing researchers from around the world!) ⇒ This will spark new ideas and collaborations with students, faculty, and industry researchers from top universities and companies located around the world. It will also energize your desire to conduct world class research as you will be immersed in a world class research environment for your entire ASSET stay.

We are co-locating ASSET with MobiCom as MobiCom is the premier research conference for mobile computing research. As such, world-class researchers from all the top universities and industry research labs (e.g. Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.) will attend. In addition, many graduate students from around the world will also attend making this a perfect venue to start collaborative research with like-minded research individuals.


How to attend ASSET?


Slots are limited to just 20 graduate student participants (preference given to Ph.D. students) -- preferably from Portugal, Spain, France.

So please start preparing yours materials for ASAP and submit your application online using a Google form. You will need the following information.

  • 1 page CV.
  • 1 page Research Statement.
  • A short support letter from their advisor.
  • A short explanation (a few sentences) for why you want to attend ASSET and how it will benefit you.

Previous Runs


This will be the 4th incarnation of ASSET with the first two being in Asia and the 3rd in Mexico.

The huge success of previous versions has given us the drive to extend ASSET to every world regions and MobiCom being held in Madrid was a perfect opportunity to do so.
